Clamp and clamp stand Essay In this project I am going to investigate rates of reaction of an indigestion tablet when added to hydrochloric acid. The variable I am going to use will be the temperature of the acid. (All background knowledge used in this project was taken from previous experience notes and experiments from work done in year nine) What are rates of reaction? The rate of a reaction is the speed at which a reactant is turned into the product. Chemical reactions can take place at very different rates (eg. explosions, rock formations). A rate is measured as: A change in something (eg.loss of mass/mass of gas given off) Divided by The time it takes to change/disappear Rates of reactions can be measured in two different ways: How fast reactants disappear How fast products appear Many factors affect rates of reaction:   Surface area The greater the surface area of a solid, the greater the area of the particles that is exposed and likely to collide with other particles, meaning more successful collisions can take place per second. Therefore reaction between acid and a finely powdered salt will take place faster than a reaction between the same acid and a lump of salt. Concentration of solutions The rate of a reaction increases as the concentration of the solution increases. This is because there are more solute particles to collide with a fixed volume of solvent particles. Therefore more successful collisions take place. The rate of a reaction is directly proportional to its concentration (i. e. as concentration doubles, rate doubles. ) (This is assuming that any reactions taking place are not exothermic and that no other variables are changed)   Temperature The rate of reaction increases as the temperature increases. This is because at a higher temperature the particles move around faster (due to heat energy being converted into kinetic energy) and have more chance of colliding with each other. Also, there is a greater chance of effective collisions. However, unlike concentration, this is not proportional. As the temperature begins to increase, the rate increases slowly, but as it gets higher the rate increases faster, creating a curved graph.   Catalysts Catalysts are substances which increase the rates of chemical reactions but are not used up or altered in any way altered themselves. They provide an alternative method of collision requiring less energy. (eg. enzymes in the body are natural catalysts). Pressure of Gases When the pressure of a gas is increased, the molecules have less space to move around in. This increase in concentration makes them collide more often. What is Collision Theory? Collision theory states that the more successful collisions per second there are, the higher the rate of reaction. In order for a collision to be successful (or effective) there needs to be enough energy, speed and strength to break the bonds in the colliding molecules. Collisions between molecules are stronger at higher temperatures. In an ineffective reaction, the molecules just rebound off each other. My Experiment I am going to investigate the relationship between rates of reaction and temperature. I chose temperature because it is easy to keep the concentration constant and from previous experiments I have noticed the graph has more points of interest than that of concentration (see page 2). I could do this in two different ways:   Measure how fast reactants disappear This can be measured either by weighing a solution before and after to check mass change, or by sight (for example seeing how long it takes before a cross under a cloudy solution is no longer visible. ) The latter is inaccurate and not easily measurable as human error plays too large a part. However, I could weigh the mixture before and afterwards   Measure how fast products appear This can be measured in many different ways, depending on the state of the product. If it is a gas, the gas can be collected and measured in a gas syringe. First, I need to look at the equations for the reactions of the active ingredients in the tablets with the acid. These active ingredients are: Magnesium Carbonate Calcium Carbonate Sodium Hydrogen Carbonate General Equation: These equations show that the final products are a metal salt, water and carbon dioxide. I can either measure the mass before and after adding the tablet to the hydrochloric acid or collect the gas given off. I chose to measure the gas (after my preliminary experiments see page 7) because:   I think this method can be modified to produce good results. Also in the preliminary experiments I worked out a good volume of gas to collect (see page 7). It does rely on human judgement (in starting and stopping the stopclock) but all other methods involving timing do also. Within this, there are two different ways that the gas given off can be measured:   I can measure how long it takes for the reaction to give off a fixed volume of gas.   I can see how much gas is given off in a certain time. I am going to use the first method, as I think that the stopclock will be more accurate than the gas syringe as I only want to measure the time to the nearest second. Also the gas syringe only has markings every for every 5cmi of gas given off, and therefore it would be easier to measure to a marking on the syringe. Prediction and Hypothesis. I predict that as the temperature increases, the rate of reaction will increase also. This is because at a higher temperature there is more heat energy to be converted into kinetic energy, making the particles move around faster. Faster moving particles have more chance of colliding with each other and the greater quantity of heat and energy means more effective collisions are created. As I wrote earlier (see page 2), a graph of temperature/rate should look like this: a. Because the two wouldnt mix at 0i C or less I have to start at a temperature above that. Therefore the graph wont go through the origin. b. To begin with the rate of reaction rises slowly. c. It increases faster as the temperature increases, giving a line which gets rapidly steeper. Plan NB. Although this is the final plan for the actual experiments, a lot of the volumes and other measurements werent worked out until the preliminary experiments were done (see pages 6, 7 and 8). In the preliminary experiment section I have specified the areas that I was investigating.   Get out equipment as specified.   Measure out 50cmi of hydrochloric acid (concentration 4mol/dmi ) into a conical flask using a burette. Measure the temperature of the solution and adjust it until it is the required temperature (by adding more cold/hot water into the beaker its in).   Make sure the gas syringe is back to 0.   Add two whole tablets to the solution, put the bung in and start the stopclock (or get someone else to start the stopclock).   Swirl the solution gently to aid the reaction. When 50cm i of gas has been collected stop the stopclock   Remove the bung from the conical flask to avoid too much gas being collected. Note the temperature and the time taken.   Repeat the experiment, and then do the same for six other temperatures. To ensure that this is a fair test, there should only be one variable, temperature. Therefore the temperature of the acid is the only thing that I should change. I should try to keep the volume of acid the same (by using a burette), keep the concentration of acid the same, only use whole tablets (to keep the surface area the same) and try to swirl the acid in the same way each time. Range and Readings Before the preliminary experiments I had decided to take six readings, all with repeats. These readings would have been either five or 10i C apart and would have ranged from approximately . During the preliminary experiments I investigated this further (see page 8), and revised this original method. However, I did realise beforehand that there were several different ways I could get temperatures of 50i C. I could use a Bunsen burner to heat the acid or I could stand the acid in a beaker full of boiling or hot water. The second method seemed the best because it was easily controllable, the temperature wouldnt rise too quickly, and you could also stand the acid in ice to cool it to 10i C. I didnt change this part of the method, as it seemed to work effectively. Equipment Use Conical flask. This will hold the hydrochloric acid and the tablets. It needs to have a bung in it and a tube with a bend in it which can be connected to the gas syringe, to stop any gas escaping during the reaction. As I am using two whole tablets, I dont need to have one with a particularly wide neck. Clamp and clamp stand These will hold the gas syringe at the correct height to connect to the conical flask. Gas syringe This will measure the volume of gas given off during the reaction, or the length of time it takes to give off a given volume of gas (50cmi ). It should measure to the nearest cmi. Burette This will be used to measure out 50cmiof hydrochloric acid accurately (it measures to half a cmi , and therefore is more accurate than for example a measuring cylinder. ) Thermometer This will be used to ensure the temperature is kept correct and constant leading up to the experiment. It measures to half a degree. Tub I will stand the conical flask in a tub full of hot water/ice which will bring the acid to the temperature needed. Stopclock This will time how long it takes to collect 50cmi of gas. This should be accurate to the nearest second. Diagram of Equipment Safety Certain safety precautions must be taken when using acids and other potentially harmful substances: Goggles must be worn to protect eyes. This is especially important as I am heating acid (although gently) and hot acid may spit before or during the reaction.   If there are spills with corrosive acids they must be cleaned up immediately and thoroughly to prevent accidents (for example slipping on acid), and any skin that comes into contact with the acid must be thoroughly washed. Hands should be washed anyway after using acid.   After my experiment I must make sure that everything is cleared away effectively. I must not leave any acid or other substances out to prevent it becoming a safety hazard.

The Tea Industry In Bangladesh

The Tea Industry In Bangladesh Tea industry is an essential industry in Bangladesh, which brings a lot of foreign currency for Bangladesh. It is the cheapest, the most well-liked, refreshing non intoxicating widespread drinks. Tea was first cultivated in china. At the same time it was also started to grown in southeast India. Day by day the use of tea was expanding in the whole world especially in Europe, when the communication was established between the Asia and Europe. In Bangladesh first tea garden was Malnicherra and it is located in Sylhet. It was established in 1854. At present in Bangladesh there are 162 tea gardens. Five types of companies are involving in tea cultivation in Bangladesh. Sterling Company, National Tea Company, Bangladesh Tea Board, Private LTD Company and Proprietary. Own by Bangladeshi Nationals. In the tea gardens it is very important to dealing about human resources of the tea gardens. Because, the tea garden in the country are running only by the proper concentration and proper service given by the labors. A group of people in the Bangladesh are mostly related with this job. According to the BTB (Bangladesh Tea Board) at present 3, 50,314 populations are involved with the tea industry. From them the registered labor is 87,709 persons. There are some organizations in the Bangladesh whos helping the tea industry in a lot more. Those are BTRI (Bangladesh Tea Research Institute), PDU (Project Development Unit), BTB (Bangladesh Tea Board), BCS (Bangladesh Cha Sangsad) etc. At present there are lots of population are involved with this industry in Bangladesh. The most of the labors are illiterate. Sometimes they dont know how to write their name. The company arranges some training for them in very less time. The training and development programs in case of labors are not in sati sfactory level. They learn by doing their work. The labors are not conscious about their different facilities also. Some times some organizations come to make them inform about different conscious facilities. But most of the times they are not attend in the seminar or program. We suggest the management team to take step to make them aware about different facilities, from which they can be benefited. Labors health conditions are not also in a satisfactory level, because of high drinking of alcohol. But they are getting the free medical facilities from the company. Labors are also getting some other benefits such as Residential facility, Food, Education facility, Job Security and Entertainment facility. On the other hand to be a managerial level employee it is highly education is needed and sometimes it is needed to do some other courses with this high education. The employees are also getting some good facilities whatever they required. The tea industry is going to face some new chal lenges globally. Some new countries try to cultivate tea, which will be a threat to the countries like Bangladesh. So it is necessary for Bangladesh to keep looking on the new competitor. It is also necessary for Bangladesh to train the all employees of the industry with a scientific way, which can boost the production. The companies also need to look for the new technology. They also need to use the best machine for production. They also need to use the computer based technology to keep the data and all the required information. Statement of research problem rational for its study Human resource management ensures right people at right place at right time. It ensures the proper utilization of human resource in an organization. After acquiring theoretical knowledge, this study helped us to acquire practical knowledge. We know Sylhet is famous for tea production and there are many tea gardens in Sylhet. So to perform our study we choose Malnicherra Tea Estate which is very famous all over the Bangladesh. We choose Malnicherra because we know here thousand of labors are working under a single management, so to know how the management manages this huge number of labor and how they practice human resource activities within their organization. In this study we highlighted the training and development program of Malnicherra Tea Estate. Behind the selection of this topic there also some causes. As we all know in tea gardens most of the labors are illiterate and unskilled. Beside that Tea gardens are earning profit and expanding their business day by day. We thought th ere must be any mechanism behind this success, so from this attraction we decided to find out the mechanism by which Tea Estates are performing their daily operations and converting the unskilled employees into skilled employees and this is only possible by training and development program. 1.3 Conceptual Development Humans are the organizations greater assets; without them, everyday business function such as managing cash flow, making businesses transactions, communicating through all forms of media, and dealing with customers could not be completed. Humans and the potential they possess drive an organization. Todays organizations are continuously changing. Organizational change impacts not only the business but also its employees. In order to maximize organizational effectiveness, human potential individuals capabilities, time and talents must be managed. By studying we tend to know that Human Resource Management works to ensure that employees are able to meet the organizations goals. Human Resource Management is responsible for how people are treated in organizations. It is responsible for bringing people into the organization, helping them perform their work, compensating them for their labors and solving problems that arise. There are seven management functions of a human resources (HR) dep artment that will be specifically addressed: staffing, performance appraisals, compensation and benefits, training and development, employee and labor relations, safety and health, and human resource research. Prior to discussing the seven functions, it is necessary to understand the job analysis. An essential component of any HR unit, no matter the size, is the job analysis, which is completed to determine activities, skills, and knowledge required of an employee for a specific job. The goal of human resource management is to help an organization to meet strategic goals by attracting, and maintaining employees and also to manage them effectively. The basic premise of the academic theory of HRM is that humans are not machines. Therefore we need to have an interdisciplinary examination of people in the workplace. 1.4 Scope of the report For this study we went to Malnicherra tea Estate and talked to the Assistant manager, staffs and labor. We search on the websites; we also search some books. In this study we tried to find out the training and development program of the garden, recruitment process of the tea garden, the minimum requirements for getting a job in the garden, the amount of wages labors are getting and others factor related to the tea estate. We also tried to find out the method by which the management trained their employees and make them as their desired work force and which kind of problems management faces while arranging these training programs. 1.5 Objective of the report The purpose of this report is to know how human resources are managed in the organization. In Sylhet there are many tea gardens. A huge amount of human resources are involved with these gardens. That is why for our study purpose we have selected the Malnicherra tea garden. Primarily we focused on the training development program undertaken by the garden management. The other objectives of the report are as follows: To know the human resource management operation in the tea garden. To know the problems of the management they are facing with the labor. To know the problems labors are facing with their work. To know any changes or improvements, employees want for their work in the garden. To know whether management is arranging any program to improve the skill of their worker. To know on which basis management select labor for training. To know in which way management arrange training program for their labor. To know whether management is satisfied with the performance of the labor. To know the impact of training and development program. 1.6 Methodology For this study we conducted a survey. We prepared questionnaires for management and labors. We talked with the manager and officers those were available on that time. We also talked with the labors working on the field. We take some help from some books. We also used website for collecting information. 1.7 Data Sources We have used both primary and secondary data for this report. We collected primary data by means of questionnaire and personal interviews. We prepared questionnaires for managers and labors. We talked with the manager and other employees available on the garden. We also talked with labors and asked them several questions to know about their job. Mostly while collecting the data from the labor and employees we focused much on their training and development program arranged for them. For collecting secondary data we have searched websites, some books on human resource management and on tea gardens. Chapter 2: Organizational Profile Malnicherra Tea Estate is a historical tea garden. Malnicherra Tea Estate was first established in 1854 by under the British ownership. The first owner was Mr. Winston a British citizen. He run the state till the 1884. Then he sold the garden to another British citizen named Mr. J.T. Bull in 1884. Mr. J.T. Bull run the organization from 1884-1919. In 1919 he sold the garden to Mr. F. Flurence who holds the garden from 1919-1925. In 1919 Mr. F. Flurence sold it to Mr. J. Mintu. Mr. J. Mintu owned the garden fro 1925-1927. In 1927 Mr. G.P. Stuwart bought the garden from Mr. J. Mintu and owned the garden till 1930. In 1930 Mr. H. Peterson bought the garden from Mr. J.P. Stuwart and owned it till 1951. In 1951 Mr. G.M.C. Brush bought the garden and run under his ownership till 1953. But when the British left this subcontinent then he sold the garden to a Pakistani citizen named Mr. Z. A. Molla. In 1963 another Pakistani citizen named Mr. S. Khan bought the garden from Mr. Z.A. Khan and o wned it till 1968. In 1969 Mr. A. Rahim bought the garden and run it till the 1970. Mr. I. A. Siddiki was the last Pakistani owner of the Malnicherra Tea Estate before the independence of Bangladesh. After the independence of Bangladesh, Malnicherra came under the ownership of Bangladeshi citizens. In 1983 Khondokar Gush got the ownership of the Malnicherra Tea Estate but they were not able to make any improvement of the estate. As a result there raised many problems within the garden and that is why in 1987 Mr. Khondokar Gush decided to sell the garden and at that Mr. Ragib Ali the present owner of Malnicherra Tea Estate came forward to buy the garden. Mr. Ragib Ali with his hard work and intelligence made a huge improvement of the garden and turned it into a A category tea estate. Now at present the total number of tea plants is approximately 9-10 laks and production per hector is 1985 kg. 2.3 Historical Background: Tea Tea Culture Tea is the cheapest, the most popular, refreshing non alcoholic universal drinks. The scientific name of tea is Camellia sinensis. Its about 4000 years ago, tea was first nurtured in china. At the same time it was also started to grown in southeast India. Day by day the use of tea was expanding in the whole world especially in Europe, when the communication was established between the Asia and Europe. Tea was first imported in Europe during the beginning of sixteenth century. Holland was the first country that imported tea in Europe first during the beginning of the sixteenth century. After that the England started to import tea in their country and the time is in between mid and last of the sixteenth century. The first actual written reference to tea may have been in a 5th century B.C. poem entitled the Lament of the discarded wife. In this poem, Confucius referred to a certain type of plant that is now generally referred to be tea. However the first officially confirmed written rec ord of tea, or cha as the Chinese call it, can be found in the biography of a Chinese government officials, who died in 273 A.D. whatever teas origins, the people know that by the 6th century A.D. Tea drinking and Tea cultivation were common place in china. Early tea drinkers used the beverage to cure a wide range of digestive and nervous weakness. A tea poultice was also used to alleviate pain and the swelling of the joints. In some remote areas farmer used to compressed block of tea as currency, a kind of black gold, that could be traded for food and livestock. In 780 A.D. the Chinese government introduces the first tea tax, bearing witness to teas widespread use, not only as a medical remedy but also as refreshing drinks. By this time, tea had spread to Japan where, during the next few centuries, tae drinking evolved into a serene and highly stylish natural, commonly known as the Japanese tea ceremony. Tea didnt reach Europe until 1610, when the Dutch began to import it fro China . When tea first arrived in the Netherlands, it often cost huge money. Hostesses from the best families in Holland had tea parties, where more cups of tea was served to each guest along with cakes and pipes tobacco for smoking. As these ostentatious gatherings, people added sugar and saffron to their tea, while loudly sipping the drink from the saucer. By the late 17th century, tea had become popular in England. Intellectuals, politicians and other members of the upper classes drank tea, which is still expensive, in London coffeehouses. In the early 18th century, Thomas Twining, a coffee houses owner, took advantage of this trend, and opened store that sold tea by weight. This business, Twining of London, survives today and is now managed by Sam twining, a ninth generations member of the family. Thanks in part to this one familys marketing ability; it was not long before English people from all walks of life were drinking their cuppa tea. 2.4 Tea in Bangladesh at a glance No of Tea states Malnicherra is the first tea garden in Sylhet and also first tea garden in Bangladesh. It was established in 1854. At the first time the tea production was not so satisfactory. At the first time the total land area was not so large and that is why the production was not so good. At present there are 125 tea gardens in the Sylhet. Those tea gardens are situated in the three district areas in the greater Sylhet. The establishment year and first tea gardens of those three gardens are in the below. Sylhet (Malnicherra Tea Estate ):1854 Hobigonj (Lalchand Tea Estate): 1860 Moulvibazar (Meertinga Tea Estate): 1860 2.7 Mission Statement of Malnicherra tea Estate Every organization has a specific mission behind its establishment. Malnicherra Tea Estate also has some mission for which it is performing its activities. The mission of Malnicherra Tea Estate are given as under, To create employment for local people. To protect this historical place. To fulfill the demand of tea in Bangladesh. To earn foreign currency by exporting tea. Contribution to the GDP. To enrich the tea industry of Bangladesh. 2.8 Organizational Vision of Malnicherra tea Estate The organizational vision for Malnicherra Tea Estate is very high but achievable. Organizational visions for the next 15 years are listed as under. Now Malnicherra is producing 1985 kg per hector but the management want to produce 3000 kg per hector within the next 10 years. The management of Malnicherra Tea Estate wants to achieve the sustainable market leadership. With the quantity they also want to improve the quality of tea leaves. Create new market for Tea. Create a competent labor force. 2.9 Objective of Malnicherra tea Estate To achieve the organizational vision Malnicherra Tea Estate sets some objectives which are as follows, To achieve the vision the management expects 10-15% development each year. In production they expects 30% growth rate each year. Proper maintenance of tea plant. Bring new place under tea plantation. Introduce new high productive plants. Remove the old plants. Implement new technology in the production. 2.10 Organogram: Malnicherra tea Estate The organizational structure of Malnicherra Tea estate is as follows, In this organization the top level position is occupied by the manager and under his position there lies five assistant managers. Among them two are senior assistant manager and the rests are junior assistant managers. Under every assistant manager there lies the staff and under the staff the next position is the labor leader who leads a group of forty workers. Under the labor leader there exist the general workers and this way line of authority is maintained in Malnicherra Tea Estate, Sylhet. Staff Their primary product is black tea. At present Malnicherra is producing tea on 530 hector land area and their total area of land is 1008.52 hector. At present Malnicherra is producing eight types of finished black tea. They are highlighted as under. With the primary product Malnicherra also producing some other crops by diversifying some land which are not suitable for tea plantation. The diversified products are as under, Rubber Rubber is one of the profitable diversified product for Malnicherra Tea Estate. It is started from 1990. At present 874 acres land is under rubber plantation. Malnicherra is producing 1.5 lacks kgs rubber per year. Jackfruit It is also a kind of diversified crops fro Malnicherra Tea Estate. Now at present there are about 30-40 thousand jackfruit trees on 26.78 hectors land. Fishery Malnicherra also established their fishery project on 3 acres land. This fishery project satisfying the local demands for fish and also earning profit for the garden. Battle nut Now at present there are 1 lack battle nut trees on 10 acres land in Malnicherra Tea Estate. Orange Malnicherra Tea Estate also produces orange within their garden area. Now they have 600 orange plants on 5 acres land area. 2.12 Location of Corporate office 67, Motijeel Commercial Area Dhaka. Chapter 3: HRM aspects of the Organization Introduction (HRD) Human resources of Malnicherra Tea Estate, Sylhet. HRM practices of Malnicherra Tea Estate, Sylhet. 3.1 Introduction Malnicherra Tea Estate is a renowned tea estate in Bangladesh. In Malnicherra there are about 1100 workers are employed in various level. Though Malnicherra manage its huge its employees in the traditional way. In Malnicherra there is no departmental set up for human resource management. But the Manager of the estate A. K. M. Zafr Ullah informally deals with the human resource aspects of the organization. In this case we can say he is responsible for the overall human resource practices of Malnicherra. 3.2 Human resources of Malnicherra Tea Estate Human resources for management level in Malnicherra Tea Estate, Sylhet is as under, Here we will focus on the HRM practices of Malnicherra Tea Estate. To collect data on HRM practices in Malnicherra Tea Estate we talked to the management and employee of the organization. They are described briefly as under, Job analysis In malnicherra the authority also perform the job analysis for various level of job. This practice depends on the position of the job. To collect job analysis information the mainly use the observation method. In this process the manager and assistant manager visit the field and observe the activities of their workers and observe whether any labor waste their time doing other things or not. In collecting the job analysis information the manager listed the duties and responsibilities of his employees and compares his performance with the performance standard. In Malnicherra they observe both the qualitative and quantitative performance of their employees. Recruitment and Selection The minimum qualification for the top and middle level managers is at least graduation. Preference is given to agriculture, botany background. One individual has to be strong and hardworking also. The recruitment process for clerical staff is interview (written and viva). In Malnicherra two types of labors are recruited; permanent and casual. Basically no specific policy we have found and they also take oral interview and the physical fitness. Some times experience is also preferred. It is interesting that in case of lower level labor the management doesnt need to go outside of the garden because they can get the labor from the family of their existing labor. It is a kind of hereditary method. Training and Development The training and development programs are arranged for the management staff. These training and development programs are arranged by PDU (Project Development Unit), BMDC (Bangladesh Management Development Unit), and BTRI (Bangladesh Tea Research Institute) under BTB (Bangladesh Tea Board). The Malnicherra Tea Estate provides both on the job and off the job training to the employees. The middle and top level managers are getting different training and development program and it is in satisfactory level. The employees are getting different types of training program from the PDU, BMDC, and BTRI under BTB. Now the managers receives two years diploma course. The course has been upgraded and before it was a certificate course. But the training and development programs in case of labors are not in satisfactory level. They learn by doing their work. Sometimes vocational training is arranged for the workers but the participation is very low. Performance appraisal In Malnicherra Tea Estate performance appraisal is generally performed on the basis of production capability of labors. In case of labors they are given certain level of production so they have to fulfill that level for ensuring good performance. Their performance also depends on the quality of plucking the tea leaves from the tea plants. The management also provides incentives for the labors who perform well in their job. In the management level performance appraisal is measured by the attentiveness of employees, their behavior, teamwork ability and ability to fulfill their assigned duties and responsibilities. Compensation Package The employees get monthly payment. Besides this they receives residential facilities, profit bonus, festival bonus. They also receive some additional facilities such as education allowances, medical facility, transport facility etc. the workers are paid weekly. The workers wage rate is Tk.30 per day in Malnicherra Tea Estate. Besides this they are getting the following facilities and allowances. The workers get ration at the rate of TK. 1.30 per kg rice. Workers get this on the basis of member, work and age. One worker can get ration for his three dependent. The labors are getting free accommodation in the garden. The children of the workers are getting free education up to primary level. The workers are also getting free medical services. They also get incentives in two major religious festivals. The workers get casual leave, annual leave, sick leave etc. Beside these the workers also get some allowances. Those allowances are highlighted in the below: Factory workers allowances: Factory workers get basic Tk. 1.10 per day. Jugali sardar allowances: Jugali sardar gets basic Tk. 9.50 per day. Risk allowances: A sum of Tk. 2.10 per day is given to the workers as risk allowances for spraying insecticides. Sick leave and sick allowances: A worker get 20 days sick leave with allowances. The worker gets half basic pay plus full D. A. Incentive bonus: The workers get incentive bonus in two equal installments in two major religious festivals. The rates are For daily rated workers: Male: Tk. 500 per annum. Female: Tk. 500 per annum. Adolescent: Tk. 480 per annum. For monthly rated workers: Male: Tk. 615 per annum. Female: Tk. 615 per annum. Retirement allowances: After retirement the workers get retirement allowance. As retirement allowance the monthly rated workers get Tk. 55 and daily rated workers get Tk. 39. Labor relations In Malnicherra the relation between the management and labor is healthy but this is not stable. But the management is very conscious about this factor and they always try to solve any problem by negotiation. There is a labor union within Malnicherra Tea Estate. The management always tried to fulfill the labor demand through discussing matters with the labor union. But still the employees are not satisfied then they can go to the higher level authority. Employee safety and health In Malnicherra the employees are getting the safety facilities both on the job and of the job. On the job they are getting the needed tools to perform their job such as mask, glaps etc and off the job they are getting residential safety, food safety etc. The employees as well as the labors are getting free medical service in the garden. In each garden we have found dispensary with one doctor, nurse, and medical assistances. These dispensaries are providing the primary aid but in case of emergency the authority transfers the patient to M.A.G. Osmany Medical College Sylhet and bears all the cost. Chapter 4: Training Development Program in Malnicherra The selected job description. Development program for the job. 4.1 Selected job description In this section we selected a position in Malnicherra Tea Estate. Here we choose the position of the manager and briefly described his work activities in Malnicherra Tea Estate as a manager. Name of the job holder: Mr. A. K. M. Zafr Ullah. Position: Manager. As a manager the topmost position of the organization Mr. A. K. M. Zafr Ullah has to perform numerous duties and responsibilities. He doesnt have any particular boundary to perform his duties. Here we highlighted some work activities of Mr. A. K. M. Zafr Ullah which he generally performs as a manger. Policy maker: Time to time with the changing situation and needs of the organization organizations requires new policy, rules and regulations and this policies is formulated by the manager. Decision Maker: Any kind of decision major or minor relating to any matters within the organization is made by the manager. Target setter: Every organization has some target and it is selected by the manager in the beginning of the year. In setting the target for Malnicherra Tea Estate he arranged a meeting and discuss with his colleague and staff. Relation developer: He also has to develop the relation between the management and labor within the garden. He also has to maintain a healthy relation with other external parities outside the Malnicherra Tea Estate. Recruit human resource: He also has to forecast the need of human resources in the organization. After that he also has to make plan for hiring new employee or not. Budget maker: Every year Malnicherra prepared an income expenditure budget for a year. This budget is prepared under the supervision of the manager. Monitor overall activities: The manager also has to monitor the overall performance of his stuffs and labors. He has to coordinate overall activities of the garden to meet the goal. Field work: Beside the administrative job he also regularly visits various spots of the garden and monitors the activities of the workers and the development progress of the garden. Motivate employees: This is one of the most important tasks for a manger. As a manager he also has to motivate his employees to give their best for the success of the organization. To do so he has to take various approaches. Action programs: As a manager Mr. A. K. M. Zafr Ullah also has to make the action programs for the estate throughout the whole year. The success of the organization depends on this action programs. 4.2 Development program for the job In our study we have explored the duties and responsibilities of the manager of Malnicherra Tea Estate. Now we will focus on the development program arranged by the garden for this position. In the tea estates this development program are generally arranged by the Project Development Unit (PDU), Bangladesh Management Development Council (BMDC) and Bangladesh Tea Research Institute (BTRI) under Bangladesh Tea Board (BTB). In the development program for managerial level they generally use the off the job training method to develop the skill of the manager. In off the job training method the manager get several kinds of development programs. Off the job training programs includes, University related program. Seminars. Views Sharing. Case Study. Selection method for development program To select candidates for the development program the respective institutions such as Project Development Unit (PDU), British DHD observe the performance standard of the managers and then arrange face to face interview. After the interview they take IQ test of the manager then they select some candidates for the development programs who met their desired standard. Methods of development program In the development program various institutions arrange several types of programs for the managers of tea estate. They are briefly describes as under, University related program In this type of program the respective institution arrange various university related diploma course and send the managers to the university to complete the course. In Malnicherra BMDC arrange this kind of university related program. The cost is also beard by the garden. Mr. A. K. M. Zafr Ullah the manager of Malnicherra Tea estate also attended a two years diploma course on Tea Estate Management from a university in USA. This diploma course helps him to develop his skill on labor relation, labor act, labor law implementation, responsibility allocation, recruitment of labors etc. Seminars PDU, BMDC etc institutions also arrange seminar program for the managers. These kinds of seminars also develop the views of managers. These are arranged often throughout the year. On this seminar the managers get knowledge about the new labor laws, technology, diseases etc. So this seminar helps them to take decisions in their garden. In this kind of seminars the managers can also express their views about any particular matters. Views sharing In this method the managers get the chance to share their views with others coming from various tea estates inside and outside the country. Arthur James Balfour and the Balfour Declaration :: Middle East History

Arthur James Balfour and the Balfour Declaration Highly recognised for his continuous support of the establishment of a Jewish national homeland in Palestine and the Balfour Declaration, Arthur James Balfour is one of the most prominent individual figures that contributed to the seemingly inevitable declaration of the State of Israel in 1948. The Balfour declaration added a new dimension and even greater complications to the conflict between the Arabs and Jews in Palestine. The declaration was issued on November 2nd, 1917 on behalf of the British government announcing its support in the formation of a Jewish homeland in Palestine. It is contained in a letter from the British foreign secretary and former Prime Minister, Arthur James Balfour to a prominent British Jew, Lord Rothschild. There are 3 distinct parts in the declaration. First, it favours 'the establishment in Palestine of a national home for the Jewish people'. By this declaration it became blatantly obvious that the British government, in which Balfour had a strong influence, recognised the Zionist contention that Jews had a claim to Palestine as a national home. The impact of the first clause of the declaration is somewhat lessened by the second which recognises the 'civil and religious rights of existing non-Jewish communities in Palestine'. Balfour intended to convince the Arabs that their rights would not be affected, thus the reason for the second clause os the declaration. All involved in this intricate declaration immediately saw that these two clauses could well turn out to be contradictory, which was exactly what transpired. It is found that this was the basic cause of Jewish-Arab hostility in Palestine until 1948. Instead of settling the aggression between Arabs and Jews, Balfour's declaration had the reverse effect. Jews were somewhat grateful for Balfour's intervention and support in the for the retaining of their 'rightful homeland', while the Arabs in Palestine despised the British government for allowing Balfour to intervene in such a manner. Hebrews, now known as Jews, believe Palestine is their rightful "homeland" in accordance to their Holy Book, the Torah and their covenant with their God. This is where the conflict lies because Muslims believe that Palestine is their rightful land as is said in their Holy Book, the Qur'aan. Thus being part of the reason of the never-ending aggression between these two religious denominations and uprise of violence at the proposed declaration by Arabs. This crucial affirmation of support by Balfour on behalf of the British government is often described as the first great achievement of the Zionist movement, and even as the foundation stone of the Jewish state.

A Concert Performance to Remember Essay -- Journalistic Descriptive

Teacher Comment: As a part of the requirement for this course, each student must attend two live performances and submit a concert report on each. The reports should demonstrate â€Å"Active Listening† and not be merely reviews or critiques. I am interested in the student’s experience at this particular performance. There is no obligation to use fancy terminology. Just tell me what happened, how it affected you, how this experience will influence your plans for future concert attendance? I am particularly moved by a report that helps me to relive the concert or one that makes me sorry that I missed it. This essay does just that. The University Symphony Orchestra conducted by I. M. Conductor and featuring Young Virtuoso on piano performed in Freeborn Hall on December 3, 2004. Included in the program were works by the German twentieth-century composer Paul Hindemith and the German romantic composer Johannes Brahms. Although both pieces were quite long, the audience, comprised mainly of students (the concert was free), seemed dazzled by Holoman’s masterful command and Boriskin’s virtuosic display on the keyboard. The first piece performed, Hindemith’s Symphony: Mathis der Maler, called for the entire orchestra featuring an enormous string and brass section as well as a percussion section complete with glockenspiel and triangle. After a brief intermission, Michael Boriskin appeared on stage with the orchestra for a splendid performance of Brahms’s Concerto No. 2 in B-flat Major for Piano and Orchestra, opus 83. Since both pieces were quite long, this discussion will be devoted to the work by Brahms. The first movement, Allegro non troppo, opened with a lone French horn stating the theme, which was then emulated ... ...ement seems the perfect release from the various passions of the first three.† The piano and strings seemed to be blended more in the fourth movement. Often the two would play the thematic rhythmic pattern in unison, heavily accenting and separating the notes. A rapid run up the keys of the piano and a final swell in the strings brought Allegretto grazioso to an abrupt end. Prior to attending this concert, I had never seen a performance involving piano and orchestra, and quite frankly, I wasn’t sure if it would work. I thought that the piano might overpower the orchestra, or vice versa, or that the combination would be too busy. I found that with a proper balance in the arrangement between piano and orchestra, and a skillful conductor such as D. Kern Holoman collaborating with a virtuoso such as Michael Boriskin, the genre can be most satisfying.

Comparing Two Charity Advertisements Essay

In this essay I will be comparing the advertising leaflet for Christian Aid with the leaflet produced by The Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA). This essay will be analysing how the different charities try to persuade us, the audience to change our views, make the people want to do something to help them and the difficulties these charities face. I will be examining and commenting on the effectiveness of these adverts. The RSPCA are a charity organization set up to help animals in Britain and Christian Aid helps out people and children Worldwide. We need these charities because they help people in need and they also support communities. We need charities to help people who cannot support themselves because everyone deserves to have a life of their own which they can enjoy. We give to charities for many reasons, but the main reason we give to charities is because we feel guilty. We feel guilty because we are so well off and we take our houses, Television and having food and water for granted. However, people in third world countries can not even afford to have a roof above their head and in some extreme cases of poverty they can not afford food and clean water. Some people give for compassion. This is when they sympathise with these people and animals and they feel sorry for them so they give money because they want to help them. However, some people give because of their religious belief. Muslims give to charities because of Zakat, one of the pillars of Islam. It reminds Muslims of the fact that whatever wealth they may possess is due to the blessings of Allah and it should be spent according to the His commands. Some people give to charity because they believe it is their moral duty to give to charity. In addition some people give to charities because they want people to think they are generous and they want to be recognized as that and get praise for it. There are hundreds of different charities which help out in different ways. These different charities include charities that support animal rights, environmental agencies and pressure groups, humanitarian charities, medical charities and child protection. The spectrum of human emotion can be manipulated visually and imaginatively. Pictures can be formed mentally from descriptive words or even statistics. Charities use this to their advantage, this works extremely well. It is their greatest technique for persuasion. Charities constantly need to advertise due to competition. There are hundreds of charities which help different causes and this is why there are so many different charities to give to which shows there is so much competition. On top of this there is the National Lottery. Since the national lottery there has been a decrease in the number of people giving to charity. The National Lottery is a huge profit making organisation and out of this they profit they do give to charity. However they only give a small proportion of their money to charity and recently there has been some controversy on which charities they give to. Most charities also do not get government funding which means they rely on the public to donate money to keep their charity running. Charities advertise in various ways. These include the broadcast media which could be television or Radio, Print Media which consists of billboards, posters, newspaper (tabloids and broadsheets) and magazines; we can also include advertising on the internet. Advertising is very important in our culture and is always around us. Everything is advertised varying from houses to the clothes we wear and films we watch. Advertisements are a way to persuade people to do what you want them to do, whether it is to donate to tour charity or to buy your product. Advertisements have been around for centuries, one of the first advertisements was in a newspaper in 1704. This shows how long they have been around and how long people have had to learn how to manipulate them to their advantage. Charities mainly use the print media option because it cheaper than television and radio advertisement. Also print media is more easily accessible to everybody unlike radio and television. This may also be advantageous because instead of having to write out a cheque the print media will probably have a tear off slip which can be more convenient to send off. This has been used in the RSPCA leaflet. Charities target people who are financially stable and socially and globally aware of the problems people face in the world. This is because these sorts of people are more likely to give because they are likely to feel guiltier than others and if they know about global issues then are also likely to empathise with these people. Charities can target their audience by advertising in certain newspapers such as broadsheets for example ‘The Guardian’ or’ The Telegraph.’ The type of people who read these sort of papers are more likely to give than people who read ‘The Sun’ or ‘The Daily Sport’ because they are probably more likely to be globally aware and they are probably better educated, so they have better jobs and would therefore would have a more disposable income to give to charities. The main purpose of the RSPCA is to prevent cruelty to animals. We know this because it says ‘The aims of the RSPCA are to prevent cruelty and promote kindness to animals.’ The main purpose of Christian Aid is to help people, regardless of their race or religion, to tackle the causes of poverty and injustice. We know because the information inside the leaflet shows us that they are trying to help people like ‘Valliamma and Shashore have a life before Death.’ From the name ‘Christian’ Aid people tend to believe that this charity only helps people who are Christian but this is not true, this name was made centuries back when this was not a multi-cultural society, as it is today, but it had to the name because they were to well known to change it. The Christian Aid leaflet uses an image of a canned drink on the front cover. This is a red colour, with the title ‘Fresh Air’. The words ‘Fresh air’ are very strong as their slogan and also very emotive, as it makes us think of those people in undeveloped countries, who do not have anything but air. This image of a can is very effective because it reminds people of ‘Coca Cola’ and western culture and capitalism. It shows how our culture has dominated the world, and how unfortunate some people are. The colour red is very effective because it has negative connotations of blood and death which reminds us of what is happening out in the world and makes us want to donate money. On the back of the can there is a box titled ‘Nutritional Information’ which is written in a large font to show that is the title, then the writing inside is a smaller font size. When we first open the poster our eyes are immediately led to the picture on the lef t. This is because we read from left to right so the left hand side is the primary optical area for us. The writing above the picture is in bold and in red. This is more eye-catching and we are more likely to read this before we read any of the other text because the bright red and the dominance in the size of text will probably strike our attention before the other text would. There is a caption below the picture which is in a smaller font than the one which is used for the rest of the writing. This has been deliberately made small because this information is not as important as the other text. On the right hand side, there is another photo and below it there is a caption and in an even smaller font than this there are the Christian Aid contact details. This has been put at the bottom of the page because it is the last thing that has been out on the page so it memorable. The biggest writing on this page is at the top of the page on the right. This is used to make sure that everyone reads this, even if they do not read the other text because this is the most important text. It also is the centre page of the three flaps, so it is also been put there as a big centre point. The right hand flap can then be pulled open to show more writing in the middle and on the right there are two small pictures surrounded by writing. The writing is broken into paragraphs so it seems easier to digest instead having big chunks of text which some people may find off putting. The text is split in the middle with alternating bold red text then normal text. On the right hand side each paragraph starts off in bold with the words ‘Just à ¯Ã‚ ¿Ã‚ ½24’ or ‘à ¯Ã‚ ¿Ã‚ ½36’. This is used to emphasise the amount of money, which for us is not a lot but for people in Africa is enough to build a life on. At the bottom again we have big, red, bold text, to stand out against the rest of the text as it is asking us to give us money and the CA do not want us to miss this. At the bottom we have the Christian Aid logo and below the slogan ‘We Believe in Life before Death’. This has been put here because this is the terminal optical area as it is the last thing we read on the right-hand side when we read from left to right so we will remember this. The RSPCA leaflet shows a cat on the cover, sitting on a doorstep and staring at us. This scene seems absolutely normal. The heading is in a bold white font which gives positive connotations as it makes us think of peace. At the bottom of the page on the right, we have the RSPCA logo in the terminal optical area which is effective because it makes it more identifiable and memorable. Then if we lift out the flap underneath, we see an image of what seems to be a normal house. There is a cat sitting on top of the sofa. The title on the top is written in a big black bold colour. This black colour gives negative connotations compared to the white heading on the first image because it is shows darkness. Below there is white writing which is smaller but is still in bold. It is now that we see the next picture which instantly gives very negative connotations from just looking at it. There are faeces on the floor, it looks like a very neglected area and there are tins of cat food as well. Using black and white to contrast between negative and positive features is a very clever way to easily give the effect you want. The RSPCA advert has very little text compared to the CA advert and big pictures. They have also printed their advert in black and white whereas on the other hand the CA advert has been printed in colour. This was probably printed in black and white because it is cheaper so more leaflets can be printed within their budget, informing more people of their charity. Nowadays, charities are using more and more shocking images in their adverts in order to make the audience empathise and feel sorry for these people. For example, a recent Barnardos advert showed a baby with a cockroach and a syringe in its mouth and this was banned because it was thought to be too shocking for the British public. This however is very effective, and if people were to believe that this kind of thing was happening then they would be more likely to give. However, this could have been made very shocking purposefully, to grab attention and to get publicity. When we first see the RSPCA advert we are confronted by a rhetorical question asking us whether this cat is happily watching the world go by. This makes us start to think whether something is going on and leads us to read on to see if there is anything going on. Then, when we open up the leaflet this question is answered, but in the form of another rhetorical question and in the background there is an image of a room. Then below this tile is writing. This writing is telling us what actually happened in this room. It talks about the cat ‘Boots’ being ‘soiled with faeces’. They have used the name ‘Boots’ to make it seem more personal to us. The ‘faeces’ could have been replaced with ‘excretion’ or ‘pooh’ but ‘faeces’ is used to make it sound more technical and scientific. This helps to make it more shocking and give the text more of an impact. Short sentence structure is used to make the reader remember, short sentences are also more effective than long sentences, which helps the reader remember what is said. Then on the back we have a zoom in on what has happened. It has information of an advice line and national cruelty helpline places next to a phone. At the end the text ‘This was just one’ is placed in the terminal optical area which makes the sentence stay in the persons mind. Moving back to the middle section there is a photograph of three kittens staring at us. It seems as if they are asking for help when they look at us. This is called the ‘look to camera’ technique. The title uses an opinion which is made to look like a fact when it is not necessarily true that ‘Boots ahs found a loving new family’. Below the picture there is a black box which is used to draw our attention. The writing inside this box uses triadic structure and repetition of ‘à ¯Ã‚ ¿Ã‚ ½3 a month’ in bold then what this can do to help being listed three times. At the end it says ‘Please help.’ This is a polite request. This is used because it is harder to decline a polite request than it is a normal request. Again in the last section we have the cat using the look to camera technique which seems as if the cat is asking us ‘Please be my friend?’ The title uses emotional blackmail when it says â€Å"I’ll be a friend for life to defenceless animals suffering from cruelty.† This is effective because it makes us want to be their friend, and protect them from cruelty. This advert uses many examples of rhetorical questions, because they are thought evoking and make us want to read on, until we reach the end, where we meet the sponsor form. ‘Dying for a drink? Imagine if this was all you had to drink today.’ This opening question is a rhetorical question and has alliteration. It persuades you to imagine, a natural reaction is to do so. It gives a vibrant picture and feeling, making you sympathize with these people. There is a lot of detail given in the first sentence, which is a very good way to draw in the reader to move forth into the leaflet. On the back of the can there is a box titled ‘Nutritional Information’. Inside this box are facts. These facts are shocking but interesting and lead us to read on inside the leaflet. This is the purpose of the front cover of the Christian aid’s leaflet. As we open the leaflet at the top we are given the title ‘How one well helped save a community from extinction’. The word extinction seems very powerful and this title amazes us to know that ‘just’ one well could make such a difference. Below the picture we see more facts about how they helped so many other people in Mali by building ‘500 concrete wells’. The first paragraph tells us what is happening in Mali and the problems. In the second paragraph we are told about what they did about it. The chief of tonsogou, Abdoulaye Togo, is described as ‘dynamic’ and ‘determined’. This is used to make people think that he is a good person and that we should send money to help him. Also, using the persons name makes it seem more personal. The third paragraph tells us the effects of them helping this village. The word ‘flourished’ is used because it gives off very positive connotations. There is a quote from one of the villagers saying that now they have more time to spin cotton. This is also very positive because it shows now that they have clean water and they can work, and sell their products so they will get more money. The next flap uses a quote right at the beginning. This quote is very emotive and moving, and makes us think again, of the image we thought of from the first rhetorical question. This gets us thinking again and we empathize with these people. This next paragraph uses the word ‘Imagine’ at the beginning of each sentence. This is used to involve us and to again make us empathize with these people. It uses statistics such as ‘1.1 billion people’ and ‘one- sixth of the worlds population’ to shock us. The flap is then opened up and we see the centre page which is carried on talking about people like Yalaya and how they have helped the village become more ‘self-sufficient’. This makes us realize that by us helping them, we are helping them help themselves. The next part talks about how after building the well ‘the people of tinsogou got together with 14 other villages and between them built their own health centre’. This is very impressive to us and it makes us think that it is worth helping these people because they can help other people by making a health centre. It also says that they have made a school. This is good because then the future generations can be educated and may not have to struggle in life as that village once did. The next paragraph consists of the quote ‘†When we realized what we could achieve we didn’t want to stop at the well. We wanted to go on and make other things happen for the village.†Ã¢â‚¬Ëœ This quote shows that CA is a charity that is very determined to help people out in every way they can. The rest of the flap says that so much was achieved by just one gift of water, and that today we can be part of these achievements by donating. This makes us want to be part of these achievements and helping other people out. It says ‘the battle against poverty’. This is a very powerful, effective sentence, full of strong words such as ‘battle’, and ‘poverty’ to persuade us to give money, so that we do win the ‘battle against poverty’. It also talks about this being a difference we can make and it says please do. This is a polite request because it asks us nicely but in a way it is also telling us to do it. The last flap informs us that ‘Just à ¯Ã‚ ¿Ã‚ ½24’ buys eight bags of cement, to help a ‘community like Valiamma’s in Sri Lanka’. It makes it very personal now when it almost introduces her by saying she has seven children and that she ‘only’ earns twenty pence a day selling rice flour. It is very emotive because she uses twenty pence to feed seven children and herself and we spend twenty pounds going out to a restaurant, eating what we want. The use of the word just is also very effective because for in a commercialized, developed country like ours twenty four pounds is not a lot of money. The same thing is repeated in the next paragraph but this time it is thirty six pounds for Shashore in Ethiopia to give money so that she can grow her own trees, because the food that she grows only lasts for five months. This also makes us think how lucky we are that we can have as much food as we like, and more whenever like as we are constantly surrounded by shops and restaurants. The last paragraph asks us to help ‘Valliamma and Sahashore have a life before death.’ This is a clever way to use their slogan ‘A life before death’. This slogan is very effective because religions such as Hinduism and Buddhism, believe in re-incarnation and even Christianity believes in heaven and hell which is life after death, but CA wants people to have a life before they die. Both adverts are very effective. However, I believe that the RSPCA leaflet is more effective because they have used more persuasive devices and emotive language where as the Christian Aid leaflet mainly states facts and when it uses persuasive devices it is very blatant so it is not as effective. An example of this from Christian Aid is ‘Please give whatever you can today and help more people like Valliamma and Shashore have a life before death.’ The images used in the RSPCA advert is very emotive when it has the animal looking at you, especially in the last image, because it seems as if the cat is asking for help. I believe that the RSPCA would get more support from the public because of the fact that Britain is well known for caring about animals. For example we only have a National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children but we have a Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. Therefore I believe that more people would give to the RSPCA than to Christian Aid.

If those conclusions are true and the white race does actually suppress other races, the Obama must have been doing something different in order to change his lot in life. I have never hunted day in my life,or even liked to watch hunting shows. But wen I saw a commercial for the television show Duck Dynasty, I had to watch just because it looked so hilarious. Now I watch the show every time its on, even the ones that I have seen over and over and still laugh just like its the first time seeing it. Duck Dynasty is for anyone that likes duck hunting,comedy,drama,and life lessons. Duck Dynasty focuses on a reality television hit on A&E Wednesday nights at 10:00 pm. Duck Dynasty's third season ‘s final episode brought in a 9. 6 million in viewers compared to American Idol, who had a 3. million in viewers in their last episode (James Hibber) . That makes Duck Dynasty the highest viewed reality television show. Phil Robertson established the family business. He crafted the first duck call in 1973, In a small run down shed out back of his home in Louisiana. Willie, Phil s' son with his business degree took and turned the small low budgeted operation and turned it in to a multimillion-dollar business the Duck Commander. Before the guys of Robertson family starter the Duck Commander business, they filmed their own hunts and sold them on video tapes. The Robertson family was also on the outdoor channel on a show called â€Å"BENELI PRESENTS DUCK COMMANDER† back in the 80's. Phil told ABC news †We use to have a reality show but it was just a bunch of rednecks shooting duck†. Patriarch Phil and Willie are only two of the Dynasty’s family members. Jase titled(Willies brother)and Jep(Willies other brother) also help with the family business. Jase is the COO of the company he he runs the manufacturing of the parts, Jase fabricates the calls making sure each one is finely hand tuned. Jase is always trying to pull some kind of shenanigan over Willies head and trying to get out of work. His motto is duck hunting,family,and god. Jep helps put the duck calls together, he is the editor and cameraman for the family business. He is able to think like a hunter behind the camera to catch excellent footage for their Duck Men DVD. Jep is Miss Kay baby . Miss Kay, Phil's wife is the head of the family. What Miss Kay says goes. Miss Kay is a little bit of aunt Bee and a hint of Roseann to spice thing up. She thinks her cooking is a gift and should be shared,so most nights she will cook up a big feast for the whole family, sometimes for the entire neighbor hood. Wives of Jase, Willie and Jep have to infuse a bit of sanity to the proceedings. Then we have Si the crazy uncle, Phil's youngest brother and best friend . Si has the job of fashioning the reeds, the most important part of a duck call is the reed its what makes the duck sound. Si is a Vietnam war vet who loves to tell crazy unbelievable stories and say thing like â€Å"HEY†ADN â€Å"JACK†. Duck Dynasty is part of up coming category titled Redneck television thrown in to the mass of My Redneck Vacation , But the two's comparisons can can only go so far. Yes both shows have southern accents and redneck past times. Redneck vacation focuses on an extended southern family, that takes their southern hospitality and traditions to the uppity lifestyle of the Hamptons, but still highlights on how they can manage to get along despite the differences in culture. Redneck vacation has salty language ,violence,and drinking is visible . The show makes fun of rednecks as opposed to showing its lifestyle. Duck Dynasty also features the family being a little out of the ordinary to most of its viewers tuning in. We watch the Robertson's tromp threw the backwoods hunting duck, fishing, blowing tings up like beaver damns. But what saves Duck Dynasty from the Redneck Vacation fate, Is Dynasty's characters are in on the joke so that no one is getting hurt. Some of the situations at hand may seem to be fashioned for television and everyone know it and seem to play their positions well. As you watch the show you might fall down laughing at the family's redneck phenomena, but you may also be a little jealous of them . The Robertson's do pick on one another but only out of family admiration. They all give a helping hand and enjoy sharing astonishing meals; They never shy from their religious belief . No its not a perfect show bathroom humor is not uncommon with this clan, We do hear some references to sex mainly when Phil is giving one of the grand-kids a lecture. After sitting down and watching the show it didn’t make me want to go out and hunt duck,blow things up or even eat squirrel brain stew. But it did make me want to pull a chair up to the Robertson's table and exchange laugh’s with the family instead of at them .

A comparison of Mary Shelley’s ‘Frankenstein’ and ‘OF Mice and Men’ by John Steinbeck Essay

I will be comparing the novels ‘Frankenstein’ by Mary Shelley and ‘Of Mice and Men’ by John Steinbeck. I will focus on how the main outcasts in each book feel and how their emotions are presented and what effects this has on the reader. The novel Frankenstein is about a man Victor Frankenstein, who grew up in Geneva, Switzerland as an eldest son of a quite wealthy and happy family. His parents adopted an orphan Elizabeth, who later becomes his wife. Frankenstein wasn’t very popular although he had a good friend called Henry Cleval. At a young age he found the need to learn and at 19 he went to a University in Ingolstadt, Germany. Here he found his need to learn even greater and his interests soon became an obsession. After four years of intensive studying he took his work further and created life from different parts of the human body taken graveyards, slaughterhouses and dissecting rooms. When the creature awoke he realised that he had created a monster, but what Victor hadn’t realised was that it had feelings like any other human being. Out of his nervousness when the monster disappeared, he caught a fever which his good friend Henry Cleval nursed him back to health. As he went home he was informed of his brother’s death, and when he saw the creature again he knew it was the monster. Scared of what his family might think he decided not to tell them but he let his knowledge of the real killer mentally torture him, especially when Justine a good friend of the family was accused and hanged for murder. He left the house and went wandering in the valleys, there Frankenstein’s creation meets him and tells him his life story. After leaving Frankenstein’s laboratory, the monster went and found himself in a village where he was by attacked villagers because of his appearance. He then found refuge in the country side and stayed in a small hovel next to a house occupied by a blind man and his two children. Here he learnt to speak and read by reading the family’s books. Then longing for some companions he speaks to the blind man which he knows won’t judge him on appearance. He gets in a friendly conversation but then the man’s children come back and it all goes wrong. The monster filled with anger and rage then runs of into the forest Here he meets Frankenstein’s younger brother who he strangles, knowing that it will hurt Frankenstein. The monster has only has request from Frankenstein, that he makes him a wife so he won’t be lonely all his life. Frankenstein is moved by this and agrees, knowing that the monster will carry on killing if he doesn’t. Victor leaves for England with Henry Cleval to finish off his work, promising to Elizabeth that he will marry her on his return. Victor started to work on his second creation when he starts to get doubts and destroys his work while the monster is secretly watching. The monster then swears revenge and tells Victor that he will be with him on his wedding night. The next day the body of Henry Cleval is found and Victor is accused of murder. He sees the body and eventually gets cleared of the charge and he heads back to Geneva very unwell, knowing that the monster has claimed another victim. He then gets married to Elizabeth promising to tell her the secret after there wedding night, but she gets killed by the monster. After another member of his family is lost he tracks the monster which eventually leads him to the artic, where he gets taken aboard Walton’s ship. Exhausted he tells Walton his story and asks him to kill the monster if he dies. The ship gets free of the ice where the crew decide to go home, Victors health decreases until he eventually dies and the monster visits his dead corpse. He then talks about his suffering and how he hates himself because of all the people he has killed. Finally with no meaning to life left he talks about building his funeral pile and leaves the ship. The book ‘Of Mice and Men’ has two main characters, George Milton and Lennie Small. George and Lennie work together going from ranch to ranch as labourers. Lennie is a huge man, gigantic in size but has a brain of a child whereas George is a small man but is highly intelligent; they hang round and work together using Lennie’s strength and George’s brains. They both recently escaped from a farm in Weed where a woman accused Lennie of rape, when he was supposedly only feeling her dress because he likes soft things. Lennie loves George telling him about his dream of having small farm with a vegetable patch and a rabbit hutch. The rabbit hutch is the only part of the plan that Lennie constantly remembers because of his limited memory span. The two head off for a ranch in California, when they are almost the George tells Lennie that if there is any trouble he is to hide in the brush near the river and wait for George to find him. When George and Lennie reach the farm where they will be working, they meet an old man called Candy who shows them their beds and tells them that their boss is angry because they are late. The boss speaks to Lennie but finds it suspicious because George keeps speaking for Lennie. After the boss leaves, his son Curly enters the bunkhouse looking for his wife. Curly has a new wife who everyone knows that she always flirts with other men. Later that evening Curly’s wife comes in and starts flirting, later on curly returns and starts picking on Lennie in an attempt to start a fight because he likes to think he is tougher than everyone else. After the first day at work, all the men return to the bunkhouse where Slim, a kind man gives Lennie a puppy. The other men leave for the Whorehouse and Lennie goes and visits Crooks, a black stable buck. Crooks makes Lennie realize how alone and isolated he would be if George abandoned Lennie. The next morning Lennie is playing with his new puppy when he accidentally kills it, Curly’s wife then enters the barn and lets him feel her soft dress, with his huge size he gets a bit forceful and she begins to scream. Trying not to get into trouble he covers her mouth and accidentally breaks her neck. Lennie runs to hide in the brush where he hopes George will save him. The other men then find her dead body and hunt Lennie down to kill him. George knows where Lennie is and points them in the opposite direction. George steals Carlson’s gun and finds Lennie, he calms him down but then shoots him in the head. The others then find him and George tells them what happened. Both stories end in tragedy, and have as a central figure as an outcast due to a mental or physical defect. In â€Å"Frankenstein† the writer starts of by making Victor seem happy and jolly person to help contrast the change in his mood and his way of thinking later in the book, much like George telling Lennie about the small farm they are going to own. In â€Å"Frankenstein† the Monster had the potential to be good or bad and for the majority of the book he was trying to be good and get some friends â€Å"I, Should first win their favour, and afterwards there love† Due to his defects though, none felt sympathy for him, he was just a ‘monster’ this was what drove him to the killing .He tried making friends with the blind which went very well until his children came back and they say him â€Å"Felix darted forward, and with supernatural force tore me from his father† . He soon began hatred for all man kind, for them being so predigest against h ow he looked. In both stories the writer creates sympathy for the two characters, Frankenstein’s monster is an outcast because of his physical defects and Lennie because of his mental defects. The writer creates sympathy for the monster by giving it hideous looks where even the creator Frankenstein can not bare to look at it â€Å"he was ugly then; but it became a thing such as Dante could not have conceived† The fact that monster had the potential to be good or bad but turns bad because of the way people treat him adds more sympathy. There are loads of other points in the story where sympathy is created for the monster, a main point is when Frankenstein goes back on his word and decides not to make the monster a partner so it will not be lonely. Also the monsters talk with Frankenstein on why he wants another one like himself gets a lot of sympathy from the reader. â€Å"I thought with a sensation of madness on my promise of creating another like him, trembling with passion, torn to pieces the thing on which I engaged. Mary Shelly keeps adding sympathy through the novel as she uses very dramatic and descriptive language to show the monsters agony. Later on in the novel the sympathy soon runs out for the monster as he turns evil and makes his soul purpose of his existence to seek revenge on his creator. Lennie gets sympathy in a whole different way, he is not totally rejected by society like Frankenstein’s monster but still does not fit in like other people due to his mental intellect. Throughout the novel Steinbeck emphasises Lennie’s two main defects, his incredible strength and mental intellect of a child and when put together these can be a very dangerous combination. Steinbeck constantly reminds the reader of Lennie’s child like attitude and his lack of adult awareness e.g. when he kept the dead mouse in his pocket as a pet. The way Steinbeck writes throughout the novel about how Lennie is an incredible worker and can lift twice as much as other men emphases Lennie’s incredible strength. The way Lennie always talks about the rabbit’s gains him a lot of sympathy from the reader as it is the kind of thing a child would talk about. Another time Steinbeck makes the reader feel sorry for Lennie is when he accidentally kills the puppy which he loved dearly, this shows that he does not always follows George’s commands and it can get him into trouble. During the story the writer does not want the reader to hate Lennie even through he commits a serious crime the reader still feels sympathy for him as he acts in the only way that he knows how.
